| Father Edward J. Ferrell Council 6476 in Holiday came up with a very unique and interesting idea. The council of Grand Knight Dave Janukowski decided to ask around and celebrate those members who have celebrated fifty or more years as a knight. The council had an open invitation to any and all knights to come out and have a good time on them. Brother Artie Morrill was in full charge of the $8.00 event. The agenda started out at 11 a.m. as a social mixer. Member young and old came together as long time friends and conversed with each other and their wives. By noon, Father Ed gave his special blessing over the food and those who came. After that, everyone was invited to a salad, a choice of roast beef or stuffed chicken with cornbread dressing and gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans and bread. At 2 p.m., Grand Knight Dave said a few words and then turned the microphone over to the Florida State Treasurer Paul Koppie. Brother Paul started his speech by announcing all that the Florida knights do and all that we as knights around the world do. He thanked those who put in the countless hours to make up the records and statistics that we can now boast to the world about. Then, District Deputy Dick Anci, State Treasurer Paul Koppie and Grand Knight Dave Janukowski announced 16 brother knights who had faithfully served fifty or more years of service to our organization. Among the most notable was Brother Steve Wrumbel, a one hundred year young man who has been married for eighty years and a knight for 65 years. There was also a Columbiette who also received recognition for services rendered. After the ceremonies, the district deputy announced how the council raised money - $65,000.00 to have the parish kitchen remodeled from floor to ceiling; $12,000.00 for a new roof to be put on and a $1,000.00 was donated to the Haitian Relief Fund. Twenty knights came out in support of the council's basketball free throw contest. Finally, the evening was finished with an open invitation of live music and dancing. |
