    Feeding the Needy

As the economy continues to struggle, Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church at 4450 County Road 579 in Seffner displays a warm concern and love to its homeless and needy community each week. The parish sponsors its "Feed the Needy" program by involving several parish committees and groups within the church. Along with several other churches in the area, each try to support the needy by feeding them almost every day of the week. Each church has a certain day that they are responsible for to care for the sick and the poor.
Once a month, the Knights from Blessed Antonio Rosmini Council 14278 volunteer to help pay for some of the food, prepare and cook the meals and serve it to the nearly 100 visitors who mainly walk up and come by. The poor visitors - men, women, children of all ages are welcomed as if they were family. Like this writer, most are unemployed - some due to addictions, mental instability and issues, divorce and lack of work due to inexperience, knowledge , transportation or lay-offs.
The Women's Guild make several "survival packages" that consist of a bottle of water and a peanut butter sandwich for the people to take with them once they have had their meal and are preparing to leave for the night. It comes in handy for the days that no one can feed them- mainly on Sundays. It also helps as the winter nights are beginning to creep up on the calendar. The women sometimes get donations like a loaf of bread, fruit or other things from local contributors and are freely given away to the families and individuals of the streets. Today, a special treat is given, a small bag of candy is handed out to the small children who number nearly a dozen for their "Trick or Treat".
Another group from the parish sets up outside with clothes to give out. An important item for especially the parents, but for all as the seasons change. Many today were seen with several sacks of clothes, sandwiches and food as they left on foot. Many show a deep appreciation for what all the groups do for them. Some cry, some smile, some come up to the members and shake their hands.
The council started getting involved with this program nearly two years ago with only four people asking for food, now it reaches nearly 100 each week. Grand Knight Felipe Cuesta is proud to lead his council each month to help the hungry. He said that his council pays for the main course and the rest is donated. They try to serve a hot meal with all the fixings. They offer, like today was spaghetti with meatballs and tomato sauce, mixed vegetables, garlic bread, salad, cake and a drink. Some meals are chicken - cooked several different ways or other available meat. Sometimes there is a choice of vegetables as well. After everyone is served, seconds are usually available and offered. Once the seconds are done, then take-out dinners are prepared and given away.
