Press release #2

Father Mendoza 4th Degree Assembly #154, of the Knights of Columbus, Lakeland, recently completed a two year project sending care packages to troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, fulfilling the primary function of the Assembly of supporting patriotic causes.

Beginning in 2007, the project ultimately shipped over 800 packages, consisting of hygiene, sanitary and snack items urgently needed by our troops in the harsh conditions of the Middle East. Items shipped as well as cash donations from parishioners of St. Joseph Church, Lakeland, were collected every two or three months. In addition, cash donations were received from many local businesses in Polk County who helped us with shipping costs.

We also conducted a joint raffle fundraiser with the ROTC Dept. at Florida Southern College over the last two years. The ROTC Dept. donated their portion of the receipts to the Lt. Charles Rubado Scholarship Fund at FSC.

The members of the Assembly and their wives gathered at the Knights of Columbus Council #2505, after each donation, to pack and ship the donated items in flat rate boxes during each phase of the project.

The coordinator for this project, Charlie Stokes, recently welcomed home his son, Sgt. Christopher Stokes, who served in the 101st Airborne Division, 3rd Batt., of 320 F.A. 3rd. Brigade Combat Team deployed in Lutifiyah, Iraq, 30 miles southwest of Bagdad, safe and sound, who served in the Group who benefited from the packages we sent.

Our heartfelt thanks to all who took part in this project.
